A new study, of 75,171 children, published this month (reference: Optometry & Vision Science) found that the prevalence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was greater among children with vision problems not correctable with glasses or contacts. The association between vision problems and ADHD was statistically significant: “prevalence of current ADHD was greater (p < 0.0001) among children with vision problems (15.6%) compared with those with normal vision (8.3%)”.
What does this mean for your child who has been diagnosed or suspected to have ADHD?
Even if your child has 20/20 vision, it doesn’t mean they do not have vision problems. Several vision dysfunctions that cannot be corrected by glasses or contacts can lead to other problems such as learning disabilities and ADHD. These vision problems are often diagnosed and corrected through comprehensive exams, treatment programs, and Vision Therapy. Hinsdale Advanced Eye Care provides these comprehensive services, including Vision Therapy.
